Abstract

Wave-packet functions can be viewed as 'localized' plane waves. They form a frame (overdetermined basis) allowing for sparse representation of seismic data, snapshots, and images. Straightforward application of such frame includes seismic data compression, slope detection, denoising, and data regularization. Moreover, one can introduce a frame of Gaussian wave packets (GWPs) which are described by analytic formulas. This allows for even more flexible representation accounting for phase shift, curvature etc. GWPs can be used for developing fast prestack migration algorithms. After sparse data representation with GWPs, they can be back propagated into the medium using Gaussian beam theory and thus they retain analytic description. Then, analytic formulas can be used for applying imaging condition as well.
