Abstract
In this talk, I will present a new approach to lossy compression of volumetric data arising from computer simulations. The standard approach to compressing this kind of data is either to use prediction methods (differences) or transformation methods with a discrete cosine or discrete wavelet transform. Instead, an approximation by linear splines on tetrahedra is found. This method is particularly good for very smooth data and high compression factors. It has an additional advantage that the decompression can be combined with extremely rapid visualization.
