Abstract
We describe mathematical and computational issues underlying a next-generation capability for full waveform seismic inversion. These include: elastic-acoustic coupling, discontinuous Galerkin discretization, gradient and Hessian consistency, parallel adaptivity on forest of octree meshes, uncertainty quantification via Bayesian inference, and scalability on petascale supercomputers and GPU clusters. Illustrations from global seismology are provided.
