What is the CMTS Certificate?
In partnership with the Department of Mathematics, the Institute for Scientific Computation (ISC) at Texas A&M University offers the Computational Technology and Science (CMTS) certificate — an interdisciplinary graduate credential for students who want to formally document their computational skills alongside their primary degree program.
The certificate requires a minimum of 12 credit hours, completed through one core course, three elective courses drawn from across multiple departments, and a capstone project. It is available exclusively to currently enrolled Texas A&M graduate students pursuing a graduate degree and is designed to complement — not replace — your existing degree program.
Upon completing all requirements, the certificate is recorded as a separate curriculum on your official Texas A&M academic record.
Why Pursue the CMTS Certificate?
Formal Credential Recognition
Completing the CMTS certificate earns you a formal credential recorded on your official Texas A&M academic record — documenting your computational expertise for future employers, graduate programs, and academic collaborators.
Interdisciplinary Computational Skills
The certificate draws coursework from Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, and more — equipping you with a computational toolkit that reaches across research fields and industries.
Career Competitiveness
Employers across academia and industry seek graduates proficient in computational modeling, numerical methods, and data analysis. The CMTS certificate provides formal documentation of those high-demand skills.
Program at a Glance
The CMTS certificate requires completion of four components totaling a minimum of 12 credit hours:
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Core Course | One course: MATH 609 (Numerical Analysis) or STAT 604 (Topics in Statistical Computations) |
| Elective Courses | Three courses selected from the approved elective list |
| Outside-Department Elective | At least one elective must come from outside your home department |
| Capstone Project | A computational project approved by the ISC Director — requires formal admission before beginning |

Who Is Eligible?
To be eligible for the CMTS certificate, you must be currently enrolled as a Texas A&M graduate student, maintain a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0, and have completed at least two approved certificate courses — including MATH 609 or STAT 604 as the required core — each with a grade of B or higher.
Review Full Eligibility RequirementsDesigned for Distance Education Students
Both core course options — MATH 609 and STAT 604 — are available online, and many elective courses are as well. Several courses rotate between face-to-face and online delivery by semester — for example, MATH 609 has in recent years been offered face-to-face in the fall and online in the spring. Delivery formats can vary by semester, so always verify the current format in Howdy before registering.

- Plan your coursework earlyApply as early as possible — ideally while you are still completing your qualifying coursework — to allow sufficient time to plan your remaining electives and capstone project.
- Capstone project requires admission firstYou must be formally admitted to the CMTS certificate program before submitting a capstone project proposal or beginning any capstone work. Capstone proposals submitted before admission will not be approved. There is no retroactive pathway for the capstone project.
