Emergency planning

at Texas schools

– to address everything from strangers on campus to natural disasters – would be more effective if district leaders would utilize community resources and “build connections” during non-emergency times, says a Texas A&M University professor studying the issue.PIC

Local fire and police departments can be vital resources for schools in times of emergencies, and the stronger the school officials’ relationships with emergency responders before they are needed, the better the response, says Scott E. Robinson, a professor at Texas A&M’s Bush School of Government and Public Service. Having prior knowledge of a school’s layout and systems could speed response time, he says.

Robinson’s research focuses on the management and politics of public agencies and the dynamics of public policy — with special attention to education management and disaster preparedness. His current research project is being funded by a National Science Foundation grant totaling almost $100, 000.
